Don't Flirt With Danger: Informative Questions To Ask A Potential Contractor

8/2/2021

Renovations can be expensive and time-consuming, so the last thing you want to do is hire a bad contractor. But how do you know if the contractor is good or bad? It’s not like they have a sticker on their shirt saying “don’t hire me as I’ll do a horrible job and take three times longer than necessary.”

If only it was that easy. Good contractors are not always the most expensive, and they’re usually not the cheapest, so going purely based on price doesn’t really work. It should also be stated that if you coincidentally happen to be interviewing three great contractors, you can’t assume that the cheapest is automatically a bad one.

Also, there are so many different business models that you don’t always know if you’re comparing apples to apples when it comes to a quote. What kind of allowances did they each include for fixtures and finishes? Some only choose the cheapest; items that most people wouldn’t select. Some don’t include fixtures at all, assuming that you’ll be paying for these items yourself. You really need to be careful to ensure that the estimates you’re comparing are actually comparable.
