Functional Storage Options I Put In Every Laundry Room

7/2/2021

If your laundry room is anything like mine, it needs to pull double duty, basically all the time, and it’s not an incredibly big space. My laundry space doubles as the entrance to our home from our garage, so we have coat and shoe storage (and with three kids there’s a lot of coats and shoes), as well as cleaning supplies, and then of course, our laundry machines. In a typical home, a washer and dryer are shoved into some sort of small space, whether a closet or part of a bathroom or entrance. It’s inevitable. This is why your laundry room needs all the storage it can get, to keep it as functional as possible.

No matter the size of the laundry room, there are a few items I always try to include.
First is to put the laundry machines on pedestals. I’m personally not a fan of the pedestals you can buy with the machines, as you can never seem to fit a laundry bottle in there, so I opt for something custom, to match the rest of the cabinetry. By putting the machines on a pedestal, as I did in my laundry room, or as Redstart Construction did in this image, you create a storage space for your laundry essentials, and you don’t need to bend down when using the machines. It’s a complete win-win!

Second, I include a place to store laundry baskets and some sort of hamper. I personally like to keep all my dirty clothes in my own closet, as that’s where I get dressed, but I do keep a basket under my laundry sink where I can easily throw dirty items that need to be washed. If you would rather keep all your dirty clothes in the laundry room, then I highly recommend a built-in spot, like this cabinetry pull-out created by Wood-Mode Fine Custom Cabinetry.

I also love having a spot to store my laundry baskets. I keep mine under the washer and dryer so I can easily sort the clothes as I take them out of the dryer, but finding any sort of shelf to keep it stored away nicely will do. I like this option by Carolina Closets Plus.

Third on my list is a folding space. If you don’t use a pedestal under your machines, then putting a countertop on top for a folding area is an absolute must for me. With machines on a pedestal, it’s just too high, so I love including a fold-up table that’s attached to the wall, or a pull-out, like this one by CG&S Design-Build.

Last on my list is hanging space. It can be as simple as a rod, as shown in this image from Divine Custom Homes.

Or as fancy as a pull-out drawer, like this one from House of L.

There are also various accordion-style hangers, such as this one by Focal Point Design.

Or a fold-down option, such as this one from Emcy Interior Design.

The best type to use really depends on your space and layout, but I can typically find a spot for this somewhere in the laundry room, no matter how small.
So there’s 4 easy storage solutions that I include in every redesign that pack a laundry room full of function. Have any questions or comments? Just drop them below; we’d love to hear from you. And don't forget to join our email community to never miss out on a post!
