Ormsby Home Renovation - A Timeless and Enduring Transformation

As mentioned in last month’s blog post, in the spring of 2020 we were hired by clients to complete the design work for their kitchen. They had an overall plan for the house, and once the design work for the kitchen was complete, they decided to focus on redesigning the rest of the spaces too, including their ensuite bathroom, front entrance, and family room.

THE BEFORE

The kitchen looks out over their backyard and is situated beside an eating nook. Otherwise it was closed off from the rest of the house and felt small and cramped. The layout was also not functional for them. They hated the corner sink cabinet as it felt like wasted space, and the corner cabinet by their stove couldn’t open properly.

Their plan was to remove the wall behind the stove and to add cabinetry instead. My issue with this solution was that adding cabinetry here would basically mean the overall traffic flow of the home stayed the same, as if the wall was still there. Yes it would be open to the family room, but you’d have to walk around the cabinets to get into the kitchen.

They were also concerned about storage, so when I looked at the previous fridge wall, all I could see was the potential for lots of full-height storage. So, I came up with the idea of an angled peninsula with a tall bank of cabinets along the one wall.

The ensuite bathroom was also small and cramped. The shower was tiny, and there were so many walls. The closet beside the bathroom was basically wasted space as you couldn’t hang anything along the one side, so even though it was a “walk-in” closet, you literally had to walk to the very back where the shelves would actually fit.

For this space they wanted to completely open it up. They wanted a separate tub and shower, dual sink vanity, better closet space, and a separate toilet room if possible. This space was completely rearranged and made functional again.

The front entrance was lacking storage and definition, and the fireplace in the family room looked dated.

THE DESIGN

For all of their spaces they wanted it to be neutral with small pops of colour. They knew they wanted white cabinetry, but were unsure how to incorporate any other colour into the mix. This is where our rendering services are invaluable. The overall design concept I came up with included white, grey, and even blue cabinetry! We included pops of colour with the blue tiles, but otherwise kept things neutral.

For the front entrance I incorporated lots of storage, and came up with a solution that included tying it into the adjacent living room space

For the family room we simply refreshed the fireplace with some new tiles and mantle, more in keeping with their transitional style.

THE REVEAL

The kitchen feels absolutely spacious compared to before. The contrast of the white and grey cabinetry with the dark blue tiles is absolutely fantastic. My clients love this pop of colour. They also love the bank of full-height cabinetry as it increases the amount of overall storage.

The ensuite bathroom is also a complete transformation. It is open and spacious, and the glass shower really is a show-stopper. The closet space is much more functional than before, and the double sink vanity is absolutely beautiful.

The front entrance turned out great, and they absolutely love the amount of storage they have now, as well as how the space feels like it’s defined and doesn’t spill out into the living room.

The family room fireplace is also refreshed and updated, and beautifully complements the kitchen on the other side of the space.
