Interior Design in Edmonton: Designing for How and Where You Live

We talk a lot about designing homes around how you live. But what about designing your home around where you live?

Designing for a family in Edmonton means thinking about the realities of life here, which is different from Toronto, Vancouver, or other parts of Canada. It means thinking about our weather, our local community, and what families actually need from their homes.

That is exactly what we're going to cover in this article. We are looking past aesthetics and design trends to the considerations we've learned from living and working here, and from designing homes for families in our community.

An Interior Designer in Edmonton Needs to Consider The Weather

This is Edmonton. Weather plays a huge part in how we live. Our winters have 50% more days below 0°C than the national major-city average and last twice as long.

When you live somewhere with a long cold season, you spend more time inside. We want your home to feel warm, comfortable, and inviting throughout those months.

So, how do we do that?

Personally, we love layering for warmth. Rugs, textiles, and window treatments add texture and make a room feel warmer, even with a neutral palette.

We also think carefully about how we use lighting. During the winter, we get less daylight than other areas of Canada, so we don't want to rely on a single overhead light. Instead, we layer light sources at different heights, such as lamps and sconces.

However, on the flip side, our summer days are long. We want to take advantage of natural light by considering window placement, window treatments, and how your furniture is laid out so that the light can move through your home.

Finally, we want to think about how we move in and out of our homes. You don't want to trip over boots, coats, snow, wet gear, puffy parkas, and hockey bags. We make sure there's enough functional, easily accessible storage in our entries and mudrooms for everything.

With all those pieces together, your home becomes a real haven, a space that welcomes you back. It's hard to overstate just how good that feels, especially when it's dark and -20°C outside.

We Look Close to Home for Pieces That Make a Space Special

Maybe we are a little biased, but our city has some incredibly talented makers and creators. We have a strong community of furniture makers, artists, craftspeople, and suppliers that we love to work with on our design projects.

Whenever it makes sense for a project, we love to incorporate Canadian and Alberta-made pieces, whether that's custom furniture, art, millwork, or textiles.

There are many practical benefits to sourcing local pieces. We can communicate directly with the people making your pieces, and there are fewer concerns about tariffs, shipping delays, and other logistical realities that come with sourcing from elsewhere during your renovation. When we're creating something custom, we can also design it specifically for your home. Instead of trying to make a standard-sized piece work, we can create something that fits your floor plan.

But there's another reason we love working with local makers.

There's something meaningful about knowing where the pieces in your home came from and, sometimes, even who made them. Those pieces have a story that mass-produced decor simply doesn't. More often than not, they're the things that make your home feel personal rather than simply styled.

Supporting Edmonton and Alberta makers isn't just a purchasing decision. It's another way we can design homes with more character, longevity, and connection to the place we love to call home.

Our Design Services Consider How Families in Edmonton Actually Live

The way that Edmonton families use their homes is anything but static.

Many of our clients are working from home at least part of the time. Many have children in various activities, such as hockey, ice-skating, and soccer.  Many homes also need to accommodate multiple generations, as more adult children or aging parents move in.

It's a lot to fit under one roof.

That's why, during our design process, we think about how spaces may need to be used in multiple ways. Your dining area may double as a homework station. An unused area in the basement may be the perfect spot for a home office or a separate suite for other family members.

Home offices are a great example. While many professionals in Edmonton have been called back to the office, you are likely still working at home at least part of the time. And many professionals quickly realized that working at the kitchen island simply isn't a practical long-term solution. It can be difficult to focus and it blurs the boundaries between work and family life.

When space allows, moving your office into the basement or another dedicated area creates a physical boundary between the two. But we have to think beyond where the desk will go. Acoustics matter too. It's hard to really focus on your Teams call when your teenager is practicing their guitar 10 feet away. Something as simple as specifying a solid-core door can help reduce the amount of sound travelling into the room and create a space where you can actually concentrate.

The point is, your home is not static. One room might need to accommodate five different purposes - from working from home to relaxing at the end of a hard day - all within the same week. And that's why we design with those possibilities in mind, so your home can adapt to real family life.

EBO Design: Designed for Edmonton

When you're hiring an interior design firm, you want someone who looks at the whole picture, including how you live, where you live and what you need your home to do for you.

At EBO Design, we create spaces to come home to. Homes that feel beautiful and personal, but also make sense for the realities of your everyday life. That means we're thinking about everything from where the hockey gear will go to how the lighting will feel on a dark winter evening, and even which paint colour will bring the whole space together.

And because we offer full-service interior design, you don't have to think through every one of those details yourself.

We've designed our process so you can enjoy the exciting parts of transforming your home without feeling like your renovation has become a second job. We handle the plans, selections, sourcing and implementation, guiding the project from the big-picture vision to the smallest details.

The result is a home that feels like you, functions for how your family lives, and makes sense for the place you call home.

If you're ready to create a space that truly feels like home, we'd love to hear from you.
